A Promise for 2019

2018 was an amazing year for the travel industry.  You may have seen your travel business grow as I had seen mine double!  The amount of people who were requesting vacations was just pouring into the travel agency.  We helped hundreds of people in 2018 find that perfect vacation, and one of the best parts is that they have been emailing and calling about their 2019 vacation.

I will tell you this though, it wasn’t like this for me about four years ago.  Like many travel agents, I was struggling to find clients.  When a quote would come in I would work extra hard hoping to make sure I would get the booking.  However, that wasn’t always the case.  I knew that something had to change if I wanted to make it as a travel agent.  I knew that it wasn’t going to be easy.  I knew that I was going to have to put in the time and energy to make it happen.  I knew I was going to have to do stuff on my own like make a web-site, start a newsletter, and do events.  I knew that if I really wanted to earn that salary, I was going to have work for it.

When I talk with travel agents and small business owners at events, I always get some skepticism about how fast I was able to grow my travel business.  Many people tell me that only a “unicorn” or “1 in a 1000” people who that actually happens to.  They may think that, but what most people don’t see was all the hard work getting there.  Sitting at the computer building a website at 5:00am or following up with people after meeting them at an event.   They didn’t see me masterminding a list of topics for my ezines, or the many hours I put into marketing my travel business so I reach those ideal clients.  It may seem like it happened overnight, but for me it didn’t feel that way.

I left a full-time job making close to six-figures.  We moved the whole family to a different state into a brand-new city where I knew one person who lived there, my brother.  I had a seven-month-old and a three-year-old.  Now a full-time stay-at-home mom was not on my agenda, but here I was.   I had been dabbling with my travel agent career for about four years at this point and barely made it to five figures by the end of the year.

I enjoyed the freedom of spending time with my kids but the guilt of not bringing in a salary gave me anxiety.  If I didn’t want to go back to work once the kids were in school full-time, I had to get this business going and I had to commit to it.  I had to get up early to get a web-site built, I had to be out late at events, but most importantly I had to market my travel business!

As I my travel business grew so did my confidence.  This confidence allowed me to bring on independent contractors, and seeing their businesses grow has been something that makes me excited and proud for them.  Last year I decided I wanted to let other travel agents know that you too can see your travel business grow. I started to write newsletters with information.  I wanted them to go out weekly but the pressure of running a travel business, booking clients, and getting the newsletters out was too much and I had to focus on the travel business.

So here I am, writing this letter to you.  You had at one point signed-up for a campaign that I sent out or we met at an event and you had said you would like to receive my newsletter.  This year I want to shift this focus.  I would like to send out a newsletter to you, but once a month.  If it is not your cup of tea, then please feel free to unsubscribe.  To the many of you who have enjoyed reading my newsletters and received value from them, I thank you for taking the time to read them.

I promise to you to make sure they are filled with value and help in making your travel business grow in 2019!

Always moving Forward and Growing!
